We’re big fans of the tv series 24 here – we can’t wait for every episode and we’ve got box sets, etc. Imagine my surprise today when I found the source of Jack Bauer’s boundless energy. Naturally I bought a good supply (5 cans for £1!) and I’m hoping that pretty soon I’ll be able to stay awake for 24 hours without eating or using the bathroom – I’ll be able to torture bad guys, look pained and troubled and much much more. Now, where did I put those other 12 cans?
On next week’s show (Monday night, 7-9pm UK, Bishopfm.com) I’ll be joined by Lee Bates and Billy Newton, a guitar and blues harp duo. They were due to come in February, but the weather gods got angry. They sent me their CD and it is great. Tune in for a treat!

Following on from my post about FX pedal cushions, here come some soft, plush guitars and synths.
I’ve got quite a few Scofield albums and I’ve seen him play live too (with my namesake on bass Gary Grainger) and I like everything he does. I’m looking forward to hearing this gospel/blues album, released March 31st, which also features New Orleans based Brit Jon Cleary. There’s a track to stream here: “I’ll Fly Away” of which Scofield says:
“When I first played this with Cleary we did it in a New Orleans style but I felt it asked for a straight country feel so I asked Jon to play guitar on it too. My solo is a combo of Dixie/country/jazz/blues- it can all work together if you think melody and space. I love Ricky’s subtle drums. He doesn’t touch the bass drum till the out chorus vocal at the end!”
Hopefully I’ll be getting a copy of the album soon – I’ll do a full review.
For a long time I’ve been longing for a really good electro-acoustic guitar to play on stage for solo gigs as well as with Tri & Big G. (This isn’t that guitar, by the way!) My current acoustic (a Martin copy by Marlin) is over 30 years old and I don’t want to risk it getting damaged in various pubs and so on. I had a very very minor windfall recently and saw this Tanglewood TW1500 for sale very close to me and for what seemed like a very good price. I had intended to buy it myself, but my good friend Phil Graham changed our arrangement and paid for the guitar for me, as a belated birthday present. Many thanks, Phil, I am truly not worthy.
The guitar is about 12 years old, doesn’t have a pickup fitted, but is well played in and the cutaway gives nice access to the “dusty” end. I need the action lowering a little, and I’ve just sourced a Barcus Berry soundhole pickup from ebay, then I’ll be using it for most gigs that I play. I’ll probably add some brass bridge pins too.
As well as the live session from Andy & Steve (see below) these are the tunes that were played last Monday night
